TOPIC: Can flipping your circuits cause a surge?

Can flipping your circuits cause a surge? 2 Months, 2 Weeks ago Karma: 0
I had an installer over at my home installing a dishwasher. He didn't know which circuit breaker would kill the power to the DW area in the kitchen (even though they were clearly labeled) so he started repeatedly flipping the circuit breakers on and off.

Next thing I know, my computer is fried (it's the motherboard) . Is it possible that repeatedly flipping the breakers caused a power surge and caused the damage?

Where can I get some documentation on this? I need to get some documents for insurance purposes.

Thanks so much for the help!

Quick cycling of power can cause problems, especially with electronics. For a computer you can damage a power supply which in turn can damage a motherboard. Not only that, but data can get corrupted on a disorderly shutdown. I always recommend using a UPS with battery backup on any higher dollar electronics. This will also help with surge protection.

You may be able to find some surge documentation on a APC or other UPS manufacturer.

Thanks so much.

If anyone knows of some kind of documentation to this affect that I can print off the web, I would really appreciate it.
