Thermostat Installation 101

Installing a thermostat for an HVAC system can be challenging for some people and easy for others. Thermostats can be complicated and when installing a new thermostat one can become frustrated. Usually it is best to leave this one up to the HVAC experts and let them install a new thermostat for you. Wiringhelp.com will attempt to take the complexity out of installing a new thermostat so you can avoid the frustration that comes along with making a mistake on installing a new thermostat.

Thermostat Installation Question

First of all, why are you installing a new thermostat? Often times, when the air conditioning or heating system fails people automatically blame the thermostat for the problem. The thermostat is the limit of their knowledge when it comes to their air conditioning and heating system. The thermostat is an automatic and or manual switch that turns the air conditioner and heating system on and off (depending on the type of system you have). How many times has a person turned on a light switch only to find out that the light doesn't come on? Usually, this person doesn't change the switch to fix the problem they change the light bulb to fix the problem. The same thing

happens with the thermostat except the air conditioning and heating system does not have any light bulbs in it to change and make a quick repair. Instead, it contains a seemingly quagmire of wires and circuits and electric motors and mechanical parts most of which the average person does not understand. It is highly likely that if you go to the thermostat and turn it on and the air conditioning or heating system doesn't respond then the issue is in the equipment and not the thermostat. A trained HVAC professional can tell you in a matter of minutes where the problem is with the air conditioning and heating equipment. More often than not the problem is with the equipment and not the thermostat. So, when your air conditioning and heating equipment fails the next time don't think it is the thermostat and rush down to the hardware store and buy a new fancy thermostat. Chances are there is nothing wrong with the thermostat and buying a new thermostat will be a waster of money.

Time for a New Thermostat

Okay, so the thermostat looks like it's been hanging around since the turn of the century and looks aesthetically unpleasing to the new paint job you just finished. It's time to get a new thermostat. Again, the best advice Wiringhelp.com can give you is to call a professional and let them install a new thermostat for you.  They can handle a new thermostat quickly and efficiently and many HVAC professionals will answer your questions about a new thermostat or about your air conditioning and heating equipment. Okay, so you are a die hard do it yourselfer and refuse to call an HVAC professional for something like installing a new thermostat. After all, you take pride in your home projects and want to understand how everything works so you can fix something as quickly as possible when it breaks. First of all you need to know what kind of thermostat to buy to replace the old ugly thermostat on the wall. Secondly you want to make sure the thermostat is installed in the proper location. Then you will want to know what kind of thermostat you need to buy to replace the old thermostat.
